LBU 349 : Rochdale type 'F' : Bristol Barb

Left is a photo of the 'Bristol Barb' belonging to David Whitehouse, this has to be one of the most illustrious of all Rochdales, and was based on an original Cooper-Bristol F2 car which was subsequently re-bodied for Alex McMillan by Rochdale. The car was hugely successful in its day, and was advertised for sale at the end of the 1955 season, having taken 20 first places that year alone. Very badly damaged at the end of the 1956 season, we are immensely grateful to David Whitehead for his painstaking rebuild into the superb car it again is, Despite being not entirely finished, the Barb had no problem taking the "Best Car in Show" award at the recent Historic Specials Day at Cotswolds wildlife park. The early history of the Type Fs is a little cloudy, as the Barb is only known to have had a glassfibre body, but Derek Bentley provided an interesting shot of an aluminium body being made in Nov 1954 at Hudson Street, Rochdale, but this shows what appears to be a Standard 8 front sub frame, suggesting an Elva chassis underneath. Was this car the first Type F, with a glassfibre mould taken off it for the Barb? If so, what happened to the shell subsequently? We would be pleased to hear from anyone with any further knowledge on the subject.

Andrew Coley : Rochdale GT

Left is a Rochdale GT owned by Andrew Coley. A brief history; Bought from Brown Edge in Stoke-on-Trent in 1980 and sympathetically restored to retain as much originality as possible. Ford 10hp, 3 speed box, vacuum wipers and rod-link brakes, converted 12volt for greater reliability. The GT was built by the late Fred Law of Bridlington, who was a Ford mechanic at that time. First registered after its build in February 1961. I know that at one time the car was owned by someone in Keighley, West Yorkshire.

Roger Coupe: ST

Roger Coupe

Left is a photo of Roger Coupes ST taken at Event City Northern Classic car show. The car was displayed as a work in progress. Although most of the cars at these shows are concourse, a car which is obviously being worked on always goes down well.

Mike Faloon: Rochdale Mk2,

Mike Faloon

Left is a photo of Mike Faloons Rochdale Mk2, this car is based on an Austin Seven 6'9" long wheelbase chassis. The body is the ex Dave Rees car which was extensively raced from 1953 in both 750 formula and 1172 formula, sometimes at the same meeting which meant changing engines between races. The car is currently undergoing restoration with the intension of using as much of the original car as possible, it will however require a new bonnet and side panels as well as a new nose, all of which will be made from aluminium in the style of the original Mk2 body.

Tony Bourne: Rochdale type F, YRF 167

Tony Bourne

Left is a photo of Rochdale Type F YRF 167. Type F Rochdales are very thin on the ground these days and this example is one of a pair of early Rochdales owned by Tony Bourne. The shell has a widening strip set down the middle, listed by Rochdale as an extra at the time.

John Walkington: Rochdale type C, XUM 461

John Walkington

Left is a photo of Rochdale Type C XUM 461. John Walkington built this Rochdale C Type from new in 1956 and still owns the car after all these years. In its early years, many miles were covered travelling the length of Britain as a salesman, and plenty of success was gained in local hill climbs and circuit races. John still has the speed trap figures of 106mph from an early race - not bad for a Ford sidevalve - but still used the car to take wife Margaret on honeymoon, even with no door on the passenger side! The side valve engine is now long gone, and with a well-tuned Kent engine the car is now considerably quicker.

Roger Coupe: Mk6

Roger Coupe

Left is a photo of Roger Coupes Mk6. I bought this car from a farmer at Shrewsbury in 2002.It was first registered 1956. I am owner No.3. It had been stored untouched under a tarpaulin for over 30 years. It took a lot of work to bring it back to life. This included grafting in sections from two other body shells. But it did eventually win best of show on the Club stand at the Manchester Events City Classic Car Show in 2013. Specification:- This car is built on a Buckler Mk5 Chassis with split front axle and coil springs. Engine is a Ford 100E 1172 (An Elva (OHIV) head waiting to be installed). Now riding on Balamy Wheels.

Roger Coupe: 1956 Mk6

Roger Coupe

Left is a photo of Roger Coupes First Mk6, built in 1956. This was my first car. I built it back in 1956 when I was just 20. I named it the C.R.F. Special (Coupe/Rochdale/Ford). I built my dream on a Paramount Chassis and had a lot of fun with it for about 8 years. I suppose this set the seed for what had to come. I often wonder if that car is still hidden away somewhere. (Please contact me if you are) Specification:- Engine Ford E93A 1172 Aquaplane Head and full flow Oil Cooler. Twin SU Carburettors.

Roger Coupe: GT

Roger Coupe

Left is a photo of Roger Coupes GT. I acquired this Barn Find in October 2014. The build was started back in May 1959 and never got finished. It is built on an original Ford Pop boxed in chassis. My plan is to rebuild this one to the original specification for what the GT was designed. So watch this space. Specification:- Engine Ford E92A 998. Buckler C/R Gear Box and Rear Axle. Riding on Balamy Wheels.

William Culbert: Rochdale GT

William Culbert

Left is a photo of William Culbert's 1968 Rochdale GT. The car is fitted with a Triumph 1500 engine and running gear. It was rebuilt between 1990 and 1998 by Jim Reid who is currently rebuilding a Olympic convertible. It is believed that there are only 3 Triumph 1500 engined cars in existence. The GT is great fun to drive and gets plenty of attention, wherever it goes.
