(Apologies, I have not got to grips with linking to images yet)
There are two, vertical angle iron supports at each side of the engine bay, bolted at the bottom and bonded at the top.
I am interested - are these OEM?
I personally don't like them, as they are big, heavy, not vertical and not aligned across the engine bay (apart from that they are lovely!).
I also don't like the bonnet bracket arrangements which are fixed to the same supports, as the bonnet catches on the body when it opens and it does not open enough for my liking.
In conclusion, I am thinking of replacing the existing supports.
Has anyone used any alternative methods that are particularly worth recommending?
I could choose to keep the new bonnet hinges / supports separate from the radiator supports, as I can see from the Forum that bonnets are an old chestnut?
Any advice / information / opinions welcomed.

I am still interested in knowing if these angle iron supports are original or not?

Alan, If you look here :-
http://www.rochdale-owners-club.co.uk/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=61&start=45
You will see a picture of the hinges fitted to my Phase 2, I would think that the Phase 1 would be the same.
They fit to the bulkhead at the rear of the engine bay.
I have just added a couple of pictures to the link above, they are the ones referred to by John in the post below. It's nice to see a period ruler used in the photo.
I will put up a similar picture of the Phase 2 hinges and a modern ruler (it is a Phase 2 after all)
May be of some help, dimensions available if you require them
Regards,

Phase 1 hinges are slightly different, I have a photo with a ruler besides for dimensions if required which Alan Farrer sent me.

Thanks Dave & John for the info on bonnet hinges.
I mistakenly thought there were a lot of posts on bonnets and hinges; I must have read about them in the Magazines.
I have not seen any photos of them before; very useful thanks.
My hinges were similar style, but bonded to the underside of the bonnet at one end and fixed to the vertical angle iron supports at the other, opening towards the front of the car.
Does this mean that my set-up was non-original and that the original PH1's had John's bracket, opening to the rear of the car?
I assume that since dimensions are offered (thanks) and they are not listed in the Spares List, that the Club does not manufacture and supply.
I am therefore particularly interested in whether anyone has used an alternative hinge to good effect? _________________ Phase 1R Olympic

Alan
If you have seen the pictures that I sent to Dave that is a standard Ph1 hinge, they were very basic. On the eye end there is a flat strip of metal that bolts to a vertical fibreglass panel. This strip bolts on to the hinge with a small bolt with two lock nuts, as I said very basic.

As you say John, very basic.
Basic is fine with me, as long as it functions well and unfortunately mine didn't.
Basic, as in simple or pure, often goes hand in hand with good design.
It sounds as though you mean basic in the negative sense, in which case I am still hoping that someone out there has found and used or designed a better product? _________________ Phase 1R Olympic

Over the years many people have tried different designs for the hinges on an Olympic, I have personally tried about 4 different designs none of which were particularly successful. I now use a system which allows me to remove the bonnet completely, this means no problematic hinges and gives great access for maintenance, on the down side it means that you have to find somewhere to put the bonnet when it is removed.
The biggest problem with the standard RMP hinges for both the ph1 and ph2 is that it has to breach the engine / cabin bulkhead to put the pivot far enough back to work properly. I have considered making a steel or aluminium hinge box which can be 'let into' the engine bulkhead and sealed however time and pressure of work has delayed this process somewhat. _________________ Working to increase the profile of Rochdale Cars |

I have taken a few pictures of a standard Olympic phase 1 hinge set up, as can be seen the hinges pivot well back from the bonnets rear edge, this is to allow the rear of the bonnet to clear when it is opened.
Hinge fitted viewed from front.
Hinge pivot viewed from inside car.

Many thanks for the info and pics Keith.
This issue is more troublesome than I thought it would be.
Since you have not yet found a solution that you are satisfied with, I am inclined to go with the bonnet removal system that you are currently using.
I can see there are a wide range of bonnet catches available online, so I will have a trawl through them.
What type are you using?
Are you using 1 pair mid point, 2 pairs top and bottom, or 'locators' at top or bottom + 1 pair of catches?
Have you found a need for locking catches or alarm to prevent tampering? _________________ Phase 1R Olympic

Hi Alan,
Les Brown made up a very good set of Olympic Bonnet Hinge,s. But I can not remember which mag the article is in?
This Olympic is currently owned by our Chairman, Howard Evans.
If you are coming to the AGM on Sunday (we would love to see you there) you will be able to see the hinge,s in use.
Regards,
Tony. _________________ Rochdale Olympic History Archive |
