The recent questions about Ph2 rear radius arms made me root out some photo's of my Ph1 rear suspension which I have modified.

These 2 pictures show the new mountings after throwing away the old 'doughnut' rubber bushes. The mountings are standard Triumph/TR/Scimitar front suspension mounts. I turned it into a 5 link, 4 radius arms and a lateral panhard rod.

I designed in 15% anti-squat and ensured that, at normal ride height, there wasn't any roll steer..

Here you can see the panhard rod mountings on the chassis and the axle. The elongated handbrake levers are from when I did a few auto tests....always good to have an efficient handbrake in a tight spot.

On this last picture you can see the mount I made for a rear anti roll bar. It didn't do a great deal as the rear roll centre was raised with the new panhard rod and therefore roll at the rear was never an issue. It always had a lovely turn into corners.

The dampers are Caterham 7 Spax adjustables and the springs are 12 inch long and 1&7/8 inch diameter off the shelf 160lb. The originals were 80lb and I went up in increments, settling on 160lb. There was no loss in ride comfort at all. I did try 180lb but then it all became a little 'jiggly'.

I have a number of different ratio diffs...according to what I am doing and they are fitted with Salisbury limited slip diffs.

I hope this is of interest.

Paul, this post and the other one, are extremely interesting. The suspension seems to have deteriorated on some cars, I believe, and these alternative ideas give food for thought. I would imagine that this has stopped any banging and crashing from the rear.

Have you uprated the brakes in any substantial way?

Joe? Zef?

These are the trailing arms as fitted to my car.
They are 19.75" ctr. to ctr on the bushes and 4.75" rear bush to c/l of shocker mount. All 4 bushes are in a horizontal plane.
Just as an additional bit of info you may find useful, my car had 5.5 J lotus cortina rims fitted and they only just did fit, but with better location of the panhard rod ie, poly of rose they would have been fine. The inset was perfect and the inside of the tyre just missed the trailing arm( they angle outwards to the front) and the top return on the wheelarch just cleared also.
I am sure you know the dimensions of these rims so it may help when the time comes.

why not a trailing arm like this for a conventional pivoting damper

http://www.throbnozzle-racing.co.uk/gallery/ROchdale/rochdale%20trailing%

excuse the crudeness of the sketch, it only took ten minutes and hasn't been designed per se, I'm thinking 1" x 2" box, tapered ends . . . . if you could get some adjustment into it it would be good, make sure the car goes in a straight line!

and a similar box like fabrication at the top for the same mounting idea, I will probably link the two top ones with a small box section, which in turn can pick up the roll cage stays . . .
