As reported on the BRDC website in June 2007, Cedric Brierley and Ken Coffey both passed away on or about 18th/19th June. Ken knew Dave Rees and I have an old B&W photo of them together with Dave's 'Austin-Rees' Rochdale alloy bodied racer, PMA 134, taken in 1953.
Cedric Brierley built a number of alloy Rochdale-bodied specials in the early 1950s although he's probably best known for his Victoria-Climax sportscar, with it's Rochdale F-type bodyshell, 1100cc Coventry-Climax engine, Norton motorcycle gearbox, self built chassis and JP500 (Joe Potts) alloy wheels. The little sportscar only weighed 7cwt 35lbs. His racing career ended after a serious crash when he broke his back. For years he ran a garage called the Victoria Works in Littleborough not far from Rochdale, where he and his small staff could make one-off alloy bodyshells. As a result of his injuries he always walked with difficulty and with a stoop, and he showed much patience when I spoke to him at length about Rochdales, some years ago. |
