As many of you will be aware one of the problems with the Rochdale Olympic that we all love and hate is the tendency for the bottom tubes to rust away on the front subframe. This is a problem not only for the phase one but also for the phase two.
We are currently restoring a phase one which has, to say the least, had a very hard life. Over its time it has had 3 of the 4 corners knocked off and replaced, substantial damage done to the front under floor, and severe damage to both rear radius arm mountings as well as the drivers side damper mounting.
During this restoration the front subframe was removed and the bottom tube, the bottom part of the downtubes, and one of the bottom inner wishbone mountings, were removed and new pieces grafted in place. We were able to remove the subframe easily because we are replacing the front floor section (from one of my moulds) and both inner wheelarch / engine bay mouldings.
Normaly removal and replacement of this frame is very difficult, generaly requiring cutting the top of the wings above the frame to slide the frame out upward.
I have another Olympic requiring the same treatment to the frame but we are hoping to do it in situe, a job we have done before by removing the glass fibre localy around the area to be repaire. Once all the welding has been done and the car is definately not going to spontainiously ignite the fibreglass is replaced.
Its always interesting working on these cars. |
