Hi All,

I'm currently restoring my Olympic Ph2 at home in Buckingham. Loads of questions as I go along I'm sure. Hoping to meet up with some other owners when we can get out and about again.

I've tried loading an image, but not sure if it's ok.

cheers

Gary

Gary, Yes the image is fine.
It's nice to see you on here, where are you up to with your car?
Regards, Dave

Hi Dave.

I bought the olympic as a shell, plus a pile of MX5 parts. One of the previous owners had decided to us e an MX5 donor, including the sub frames. I'm going back to 'standard' with a new subframe, once I've reinstated the floor snd inner wings. I'm going 1500 pre crossflow, hopefully with a Mazda RX8 six speed gearbox.

I've removed the flared wheel arches and bonded in new panels to all four corners and then spent ages fitting Bedford CF bonnet hinges. I've fitted an MG Midget fuel tank and now just about ready to install the back axle. Keith has modified the trailing arms with Rose joints.

Spent today stripping the Spitfire front suspension, ready to start the refurb tomorrow.

Gary, you have some work to do on the front end, the engine bay bulkhead and inner wings plus the front floor, Quite a job facing you.

If you need any pictures of how it all should be just let me know and I will do my best to help you.

The rose joint solution from Keith is just the ticket for the rear suspension.

You seem to be well on top of The GRP side of things, have you worked with fibreglass cars before?

Regards, Dave

yes, the cut out for the MX5 Sub frame left a pretty big hole!

It does give good access to the engine bay though, so I'm trying to do what I can before putting the floor and inner wings in.

do you have triumph front suspension? I know I need to swap the lower wishbones from left to right, right to left, but not sure if I need to remove the brace between the two parts. Sure I've seen it written somewhere, I'll have to go back to Olympic Running.

I've built a couple of kit cars and helped mates with a few so I've had a bit of practise with GRP, must admit nothing on this scale.

Any photos of your front suspension would be handy.
Heres a pic of my last project, sadly sold to make way for the Olympic.

Gary, Have a look here :- http://www.rochdale-owners-club.co.uk/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=74
It might be worth having a look through some of the old Olympic posts here
on the forum.

Gary, I don't know if you found this:- http://www.rochdale-owners-club.co.uk/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=68.

It may be of help in your brave rebuild of the shell.

I can do pictures of all parts of the shell if you need them.

Regards, Dave

Hi Gary
Welcome to the 'Other Forum'.
I'm following your restoration and I'm very impressed with the quality of your work and the spec of your parts. Keep the photos and questions coming and good luck.

Thanks Dave and Alan,

Dave, any pictures of your engine mounts would be much appreciated. I have the standard Ford part, but I haven't seen how that connects to the body.

Alan,

I'll keep posting the pictures as I go along, do you think it would be best to start a separate build diary on here?

I've fitted the Bedford CF bonnet hinges, a lot of work to get them set up correctly, but seem to work fine.

And the MG Midget fuel tank is in under the boot floor.

trying to wrestle in a combined heater / air con. unit which is turning in to one of those 'I wish I hadn't started this' Jobs!

Gary, Here is a picture of my engine and gearbox mounts,(half way down the page) I can measure up and do a CAD drawing if you want.
http://www.rochdale-owners-club.co.uk/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=68&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15
I have access to laser cutting if needed.
I am lead to believe that the quality of the earlier ford mounting rubber,s is not very good and I am looking at new/ modified engine mounts that will use the later Ford/Lotus Elan type mounting rubbers, Interested?

Regards, Dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the engine mount info. Very interested indeed.

A CAD drawing would be great, or a set of laser cut parts even better.

Again, very interested in the later type mounts. On my Westfield, I cut off the block rubber mounts and used the bobbin type.

A drawing of the gearbox mount would be very useful, I'll probably need to modify it to suit the Mazda gearbox I'm planning to use.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers

Gary

Gary, My answer to the above would be a definite yes and I will try to explain why.

1)By starting your build diary on the forum you will provide a permanent record of your work on your car. This record can be accessed by anyone with internet access. An example of the value of this is illustrated above in the links provided that were used to answer the queries you had. They were forum posts from some years ago but were still relevant to your build. Had the original information just been posted on Facebook it would have been long gone and of no use to future Rochdale owners.

2)Responses and opinions to your posts on the forum can only come from club members so you know their validity as they will be from people with a genuine interest in your car. Should you require a wider response to your posts it is quite easy to link the post to Facebook and sift through the information.

3)A build thread on the forum can become a valuable and interesting part of your car's history especially when it is time to sell on to a future enthusiast. A good example of this is The French Olympic as posted on the forum.

Gary,What are your views on this? Or the views of anyone else reading this.

Regards, Dave

I agree 100% with all of Dave's positive reasons for using this forum.
I also think the simpler, linear format of this forum is far easier to read, understand, follow and search than the Facebook format.
For me, the disadvantages of the Facebook format are:
Major posts are very quickly lost in the never ending stream of posts.
Minor posts are easily lost and difficult to follow in the branch structure.
All in all I believe this forum is best suited for sharing and storing vitally important knowledge on behalf of current and future ROC Members.

Gary,
Here is a picture of the later type engine mounts as discussed above plus the originals for reference

They are a better proposition than the early ones and they are failsafe if fitted the right way up.

I will draw up the metal bits to use them (Ford to Olympic) and see what you think.

Will keep you posted

Regards, Dave
