Hi Les, great pictures! I have saved the pic of the interior of the Olympic, as it is the most complete interior that I have seen. I should imagine that a lot of the wood is "custom".
I for one would appreciate you putting pics of the suspension on here.

Thanks Rod - I cut all the wood from the richest chunk of mahogany I have ever seen. I always liked to see different materials together, and set the instruments in 3mm aluminium sheet and used an oxblood leather hide for the trim. Countersunk stainless screws hold the lot together. The Les Leston looked pretty naff at the start, and, incredibly, had been fouling on the instrument binnacle for about 120 000 miles.... I had to turn a double piece of the mahogany about 2" thick to get clearance. The gear lever and centre cap were also made on the lathe. Careful cleaning and two coats of eggshell polyurethane transformed the wheel - glad I kept it now.
Thanks also Paul for the picture. Trouble is, I STILL don't know how you've done it - I was only putting the post office shot up to test the process! Is the IMG button something to do with it? I've tried the FAQs - "To display the image use either the BBCode [img] tag or appropriate HTML (if allowed)." eh? Pasting the address obviously doesn't work. If someone can enlighten me....

Les, is that a vent of some sort on the nearside front wing behind the wheel. or is it a reflection?

Are you talking about the top hinge box? The only 'vent-like' thing I can see near the wing. |

Sorry, guys, I'd missed all the interest with the euphoria of getting my pictures on the other strand! The first owner (Dave Collings) seemed to have a "thing" about little fibre-glass blisters and had them all over the car when I bought it. There were two lumps for a hatchback support bracket and another on each side where the pillars had been drilled as a top mounting point for seat belts. The remaining one commented on was an air intake for the heater which Dave had fitted down there. Never made much of it functionally, but it generated such a lot of interest I hadn't the heart to cut it out.
OLYMPIC PEDAL BOX Do you still want one of these Rod? Keith Pratt rang me last night for a follow-up chat on my magazine piece about rear suspension. He has a complete box tucked away, which sounded in rather better condition than mine. If you want to e-mail me at lesbrown46@hotmail.co.uk I will send details. Keith bought his Olympic new a month or two before mine (1964). He thinks the rear holes were already drilled, and, unlike CTO, the ride was really smooth from the start (I think they are IF everything is right). He really regretted the unavailability of Woodheads - I think he would have gone for the set I just sold - but did come up with a telling observation. Apparently, the threaded bit at the bottom of a Woodhead was shorter than on later types. The result was that the rubbers were only lightly squashed as the nut ran out of thread - they could still be turned by hand when installed. Rochdale said this was normal, and it would clearly allow a lot more compliance than if you really tighten down on a SPAX or AVO set-up. I did find only half-tightening an AVO and then using a lock nut made a very noticeable difference to the ride before I did the re-alignment bit.
E-BAY sorry Paul, you’re not having much luck are you? Still, if at first you don’t succeed.... there’s a pair(?) of AVOs going on tonight. And a few other bits and pieces!

I think that they look so much better with the original rear wheel arches, such a balanced design. Mine have been cut away, but I still have the original parts handed down to me, and I will try to reinstate them- providing I can fit some wheels under them!
