CTO 289B had been my daily transport for 7 years, but didn't like playing second fiddle to the MX5, which has been so much (easy) fun in the same role. The hood's down in about 10 seconds, steerings so precise, the screen's clear within seconds of starting and its about 5mpg better than the Ford engine, as well as being much cheaper. Not the same, I know, and the Olympic would pull a crowd wherever it was parked, but with the GT still needing sorting it just wasn't getting the care it deserves - and Howard was obviously as enthusiastic as I was, so something had to give!
I've opened a FLICKR account, Tony, and put a number of pictures on my photostream (captainles46). At the moment these aren't showing up with the search you listed, I wonder if they take a bit of time to register like U-tube. I'll leave it for a bit, if they don't pop up I'd welcome suggestions.
Think (hope) the web site's looking up in the future - it's no wonder its got so little support when its so difficult to get in!
The Matthews household was apparently well known to local police before all this, Paul. We certainly didn't contribute to any of the local appeals that were everywhere - one local businessman sent in £5000 straight off. She can't be THAT stupid, though - there's £25000 been raised, and no trace of it has yet been found anywhere! |

Thanks Rodsmith for alerting me to the Rochdale bits Les has for sale for the Olympic on Ebay. I have purchased the engine mounting brackets.

Hi Les,
Bonnet arrived ok. I don’t understand the hinge situation, the are no holes drilled for the hinges. CNK 210B was delivered to Motorsport Mag as a complete new kit, so I would have thought the bonnet would have been pre-fitted by the factory? This looks like the bonnet was just held to the body by the front bonnet lock. Still as I will properly use a different hinge system I am happy its not drilled.
I do not have an answer for the flickr problem I will see if I can load a photo.
Regards Tony. |

It was a fair fight, I said I was bidding for several lots!!! At least now I have an original set to try and see if they are any better than the AVOs on there. I have also bought an Escort back axle to replace the worn Riley one and may use the 4 linkage idea, plus the Panhard rod of course. I am not happy with the adaptor idea on the front hubs- it looks weak and spaces the wheels out too far from the vertical link pivot point, is that kingplin inclination? I will get the hubs with a Ford pcd to match the new rear axle. Eventually......!

Come on, James, keep up! You can't expect Rod and Paul to do all the work!
It's so difficult to know what these bits are worth, the start price/reserve indicates the bare minimum I would expect, but some of these bits are going way beyond that for some people. I did think the shockers were very reasonable though, Rod. I just paid £140 for a couple of AVOs just before I sold CTO. I will be VERY interested to hear how the Woodheads compare when fitted. But don't worry folks, there's still some SPAX and AVO bits to come!

Well. I didn't get the pedal box so I will have to make my own pedals from Dave M's measurements. My Olympic was an automatic at one stage- possibly from new- and the new pedals fitted for the manual gearbox conversion, have bits bolted onto the bottom that need remaking.

As I didn't succeed with the Woodhead dampers and springs, I'm interested in the Spax dampers he has. I wonder when Les intends to put them on ebay, and I'd prefer not to bid against anyone here. If they want them badly enough, they can have them. Although it might be against the spirit of selling, I don't want to get involved in a bidding war. |

I know what you mean, Paul, buying can be more frustrating than fun at times. I once turned up at a chap’s house who had advertised a (Rochdale-registered) Thruxton Velocette for £75 - minutes after a guy who had driven up overnight from London had clinched the deal. There must have been at least another dozen arrived in the few minutes I was there, all shaking our heads as it was quickly stuffed in the back of a van for a speedy getaway. Current value £8000? £10 000?
I just wish I had enough of these Rochdale bits for everyone - its a long way from the complete car that I bought. No engine, gearbox, instruments, seats, trim, electrics etc. And you’ve just no idea who is going to need which parts. I’ve had so much interest and requests (especially from abroad) I think this is the fairest way of dealing with them though it is now apparent that quite a few will be disappointed. I will be resuming the entries shortly after Christmas - I think we all have other things going on over the festive season!

Hi folks - happy new year. First off, Tony, the folks at FLICKR have got round to putting my Rochdale pics up (from 11th Dec!) -see http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=rochdale+olympic&s=rec
There's also a couple of GT pics I have on as well. Still not sure about putting pics on here, though - I notice lots of folks do it - I have quite a number that go with the rear arm/shocker discussions I'm sure you would find interesting.
Secondly, you may have noticed I've started to put my remaining Olympic bits up for sale, so you might want to keep an eye on Ebay (if you're not too frustrated with the pre-Christmas bidding!). My SPAX shockers + springs are on at the moment, lights + propshaft + front suspension + axle in the near future. |

HI ALEX
you do need to be careful. I wrote an article in the SPRING 2006 magazine. Wheels are KN MINATOR 5x13” with an offset of ET30. They are Midget size and standard PCD. The usual ET20 is 10mm wider each side and will rub on the rear body (Riley axle. Ford may be worse) Colour Anthracite - dark silver - went well with Rover Astral Blue body, which several Olympics seem to have been sprayed.
How did you get my picture on here? I am trying to PASTE from another pic - fingers crossed!
