Hi Dave
Thanks for the photo and info on your set-up - very useful.
I doubt I will pursue the MGA option because of the scarcity and price - and I don't value the originality of the handbrake so highly.
Already checked for part numbers none unfortunately.
I think mine is probably LHD. Not sure why the original owner went to the trouble of modding and installing in that position and we will never know, but each to their own.
Ergonomically / theoretically it make sense to me to have the handbrake near the gear lever, rather than further away, but test fitting will be essential to find out one way or the other.
Food for thought. _________________ Phase 1R Olympic

Hello Everyone,
I'll send a picture tomorrow.
It will only show the overall installation but will give a good idea of how the lever sits wrt the seat.

Alan,
Just looking at the first picture you posted at the start of this topic I can see a rectangular hole cut into the tunnel, just below the gear lever, could this have been a previous mounting position for the hand brake or does it have another use.

I have been giving some thought to your handbrake issue, I am now fairly certain that the handbrake on your car is from an MG Midget which fit on the passenger side of the transmission tunnel on a right hand drive car. Your previous comment on fitting your handbrake to the passenger side of the tunnel makes sense and would give you the room you want, and the cable would end up inside the tunnel as per most Olympics. _________________ Working to increase the profile of Rochdale Cars |

Looks like you are spot on Kieth, MG Midget.
Now Alan can fit it on the other side of the tunnel and make the passenger's leg uncomfortable.
Regards, Dave

Hi Dave
I thought the same as you when I was looking at it previously. I can't tell for sure. There are holes on the other side as well. There are holes everywhere!

Thanks Keith. It is reassuring to know I am treading a well worn path. The fact that MG Midgets, MX5's and others fit the handbrake on the passenger side suggests that the ergonomics are OK. I have certainly never heard any complaints from MX5 Owners. _________________ Phase 1R Olympic

Many thanks for your help everyone
I am going to use my existing MG Midget handbrake and fit it on the passenger side.
I will need to tie this in with overhauling the brake system, so it will be a while before I do it yet.
I will post photos as soon as I have finished. _________________ Phase 1R Olympic

Hello Alan,
I trust that the picture has come across (not done it previously). As positioned, the brake lever falls naturally to hand with no thought about it being in an inappropriate location.
The lever is connected to the swingle tree on the back axle directly by a rod which I put inside a rubber tube to minimise noise caused by its vibrating against the tunnel moulding.
Regards,

Hello Howard
Unfortunately the photo has not appeared.
Are you using the blue coloured "Add image to post" directly beneath the box you are typing your response in?
Choose your photo file, click on it, then click "open" and it should upload onto the website.
Give me a call if you are still having problems. Tel: 01706 372188.
Many thanks for the info.
Regards
Alan
p.s. "swingle tree" is a great tech term that I have not heard before, thanks _________________ Phase 1R Olympic

Hello Alan,
When I do what you suggest (as I did yesterday) a text string appears in the message box relating to the picture, but not the picture itself. If I then click 'preview' the picture appears in a separate box above the one containing the text, but clearly it is not communicated.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,

Hi Howard,
All of that sounds correct - you have inserted the photo and you can see it as a text string in the 'Message Body' (not the 'Subject').
Final action: press the 'Submit' button and that should be it.
If that doesn't work, give me a call.
Regards
