A few nights ago I saw CAR SOS restored an ACE Aceca. They went to a specialist to have the rear screen accurately replicated [Laser scanned]. Does anyone know who they went to? A few years ago I bought a Club replacement and put it in my store. Now I come to look at it I see it is not a great replica- it is corrugated along the bottom edge, for example. Caveat Emptor of course. I would like to explore a more modern accurate replication.

Hi Ron, regarding your rear screen, have you tried contacting the TV programme or either of its presenters?
I'm sure Fuzz Townshend would have the contact you need, he has a garage in Bicester where he's an agent for Classic Oils.
Contact No: 01869 227062
Classic Oils Ltd, Bicester
Building 96, The Lubricant Store,
Bicester Heritage,
Buckingham Road,
Launton, Bicester OX27 8AL
https://www.classic-oils.net/
He also has a Face Book page and frequently hosts classic car events in and around Bicester.
https://www.facebook.com/ClassicOils/
Might be worth trying to get in touch with him at either website?
Best of luck (my old replacement Phase 2 screen was not a great effort either - so I understand your feelings, perhaps they're better now?). |

I mailed the SOS address but got no reply. Thanks for your leads- I will follow up. I do not have any grouse with the replacement that I got, but that was more than 10 years ago, and reverse engineering methods have improved since then. The item produce for the SOS show looked a lot more even [well it would be wouldn't it !] so worth following up. Doubtless it will cost more than the £150 or so that I paid back then! |

No I have not. I assumed screens to be slow moving stock items and most probably from the same suppliers. So I was not inclined to spend another £150 or so for the same outcome. But to be fair that was wrong. So I will mail him and explain my concern. |

I am pretty sure that John had another supplier make a new batch of rear screens, which were of a better quality. _________________ Working to increase the profile of Rochdale Cars |

The screens that I have now are from a different supplier to what they were 10 years ago, they are also made from polycarbonate which is also different to the screen that you have |

I keep them in stock but you will have to collect , if you require on let me know I will send you order form. You can either pay when you pick up or pay before hand but I am afraid you will still have to pick up from me.
Regards

I was very disappointed to receive no response from the F Townsend links I was given here. I am sure that restorers like us form part of the target audience for his programme. Yet the names of useful suppliers/contributors always seem relegated to 24 nanoseconds of very small print among the closing programme credits. This is my second frustration with this otherwise excellent series.
Anyway, feeling I had little choice therefore, I ordered another screen from the club. Folklore suggested that screens from the new supplier were better than the one I had bought earlier. That was back in November last year. Screens are by collection-only and getting it from Ross on Wye up to Tyneside [via a sort of CoVid dodging relay system] took till late summer. By this time I had switched my attention to the front of the car. Consequently, I do not know if the new screen actually fits yet. But, offering it up to the shell opening, it looks a great deal more promising than the first one. And it lies better over the old [but crazed] original screen. |
