Gents, sorry if this is a silly question, but I'm curious...

What's in a Rochdale chassis number?
What was the sequence of numbering? Did they at Rochdale merely start at #1 with their very first car, and then number them accordingly as new cars were assembled? Or was there any logic to certain groups of numbers being allocated to specific models?

For instance, as far as I know, Olympic Phase 1 and Olympic Phase 2 production overlapped. So did the Phase 1 cars all have a specific group of VIN's with all Phase 2 cars having a later (or higher) group of VIN's? Or were they simply allocated VIN's as they were produced? In which case, there would be early Phase 2 cars with an earlier VIN than some of the later Phase 1 cars.
I know this is a really nerdtastic topic, but it's one which interested me...

My own 1963 Phase 1 has VIN '1920'. Is there anything to be deducted from that number?

Rochdale Motor Panels never issued chassis numbers as such, this was left to the first owner to sort out, RMP referred to the bodies they built using the order book numbers. Quite a lot of owners took on this reference and used it as the VIN however this was by no means the only numbering system, as the first owner/builder was left to their own devices.

A couple of my cars have order numbers for the vehicle identification, but others have some pretty random numbers.

It is this very reason that the keeping of records on Olympics is so difficult, I feel that Derek will probably confirm this.

Ha! All a bit haphazard then... Very Happy
Okay, thx for your reply Keith.
But can we then deduct anything of interest from the order book number '1920'?

Tony, is this one for the Archive to provide an answer to?

Regards, Dave

I haven't got my hopes up too high.
But I just love finding the history of any classic car I own. So anything - even the smallest and insignificant of details - would be of interest to me...

Hi Anders and Dave,

I have no idea how I have missed this topic (go to the back of the class)
Rochdales and Chassis/VIN numbers are as Keith said in his post.
The Factory Ledger we have only go,s to June 1962, ending in number 1767.
I am taking a guess that your chassis number of 1920 is also its Factory Ledger number I would know so much more if we had the later Ledgers, like who was the 1st owner and what was the original build spec etc.
What I have passed on to you is all we know at the moment, sorry it is so little.
But when it is back on the road and going to shows and photographs are on the Internet someone may recognise the car and come back to use with more info.

Regards Tony.
