I needed a second axle to work on to incorporate my proposed mods so according to the parts list I needed a Ford Corsair rear axle!!!. The chances of that happening are bordering on a Miracle, so a bit of research called for.
It turns out that the Cortina Mk 1 used the same axle as the Corsair but with different diameter brakes. Eight inch diameter drums on the basic Cortinas and nine inch drums on the Cortina GT and Corsairs.
To identify the correct axle casing for our Olympics you need to measure the width of the bare axle casing from flange to flange (the bit the brake backplate bolts on to). It needs to measure 47 inches.
All the different brake options are interchangeable.
Should you need just replacement half shafts they need to be 25.5 inches long from drum mounting face to the end of the splines.

It is very important to use the correct width axle on the Phase 2 if you wish to retain the original wheel arches. This is because the trailing arms are mounted further apart at the front than they are at the axle and they encroach on the inner tyre wall.
The maximum tyre width is 165mm for safety from rubbing on either the trailing arm or the return flange on the wheel arch. Make sure the Panhard rod is secure with no play at all.
Comments and corrections are welcome.
