As many people will know I have been restoring Olympics for almost 40 years now for myself and for customers. One of the questions I have been asked recently is regarding the removal and replacement of the original moulded in fuel tanks on the Olympic.
My instinct has always been to replace them with something a little safer in the form of mild steel, stainless steel or aluminium tanks in one form or another.
Some time ago we (the owners club) had some stainless steel phase 1 and phase 2 tanks made up. The phase 1 tanks hold about 4 gallon per side, the phase 2 tanks hold about 3 gallon per side, the capacity isn't ideal but as they were designed to fit inside the original rear wing apertures the capacity was as much as could be achieved.
The supply of these original tanks has now all but dried up.
Both myself and John Plant have been asked about the possibility of more tanks being manufactured. To this end the committee have discussed having some tanks made up but before we commit to having new tanks manufactured we thought that it may be prudent to see how many people may be interested in having new tanks.
I have done some preliminary research on having these made up as per the original designs and have come up with an estimated cost in the region of £250 per tank. John is getting some more estimates together so that we can more accurately gauge the cost, therefor the price we can offer them to club members.
In the first instance we need to get a feel for the interest. If this is something that you would be interested in please let me know either via this forum or on keith@scholar-racing96.com stating whether your car is a ph1 or a ph2. _________________ Working to increase the profile of Rochdale Cars |

Hello Keith,
Although I (only) have a RH steel tank in my Phase 2, the effective range of 100 miles is inconvenient, so I would definitely buy a LH tank.

We are currently in the process of getting quotes together for Phase 2 fuel tanks. the price per pair is looking like it will be in the £600 range, if you are interested please let John Plant, myself or Howard know as we may be about to put an order in and need to know how many are required. _________________ Working to increase the profile of Rochdale Cars |

I had a pair of these tanks and noticed that:
a) filler neck diameter was too large for the fillers on my Phase 1
b) the tanks are symmetrical but the car is not! One side was nowhere near the correct fit.
So please don't fabricate exact replicas of these tanks as they won't be much use!
In my case I made up a pair of ally tanks (with a friend doing the welding). Capacity is similar to the above but I guess few will want to travel 500 miles in an Olympic without stopping for a break! |

Many thanks for your observations Rob, the tanks we are having done are phase 2 ones. I have personally fitted about 6 pairs of the original phase 1 tanks without a problem, yes they have to be fitted to the car as apposed to making the car fit the tanks but isn't that the same with all Olympic restorations. _________________ Working to increase the profile of Rochdale Cars |

Rob your points have already been noted as the tanks that I have are not perfect fits in my Ph2. a mockup set will be made first and be fitted in my car before any sets being made.
I also agree on the hole size being rather large.
As soon as I have more info will post on web site.
